Understanding the key events that shaped their childhood is essential to fully comprehend Gen Z. The most noteworthy formative events include a lack of work experience, the advent of the smartphone/social media, social justice movements and the culture of safety.
Regarding work experience, only 19% of 15–17-year-olds reported having worked at those years of their life. This is in stark contrast to 30% of Millennials and 60% of Generation X. There are many attributable reasons for this including Gen Z enjoying a generally higher median household incomes than their older counterparts. Moreover, the increased competition meant it was harder for them to get into higher education institutions, which in turn, led to other extra curriculum activities being prioritised over part-time jobs.
